Want those long, enviable nails but don’t want the high price tag that comes with them? During these rough economic times, more and more women are considering doing their acrylic nails at home, but just aren’t sure how to do them.
Well, we’re here to show you how to do your acrylic nails at home and at a fraction of the cost that spas and salons will charge. With a bit of practice and know-how, you will be able to have fantastic “do it yourself” false nails in no time.
Why Acrylic Nails?
When it comes to choosing either acrylic or gel nails, many women opt for acrylic nails as they are durable, long lasting, and will hold nail polish better than their gel nail counterparts. The drawback to acrylic nails is that they can cost quite a bit of money, particularly if you are having them filled every 2-3 weeks, which is why women often abandon their false nails and only have them in place when ever a special occasion arises.
How can I Apply my Own Acrylic Nails at Home?
Applying your acrylic nails at home is a cost effective way to maintain those beautiful long nails. Though it may seem a bit difficult at first, with some practice you will soon be able to apply your own acrylic nails at home in no time.
The first step is to prepare your natural nails appropriately so that the acrylic nails or acrylic tips can bond properly. Begin by removing all traces of old nail polish and then push back and trim your cuticles with an orange stick and cuticle scissors. “Rough” up your nails a tad (be sure not to over do it – simply brush a file over your nail once or twice) to help the acrylic nail adhere to your natural nail.
Once your nails are dry and clean, brush the adhesive for your acrylic nail on top of your natural nail. Trim and file the acrylic nail so that it will fit your nail bed perfectly (if you do not trim the nail, then you risk having a very unnatural and ill-fitted nail that will easily “pop off”). You have to do this quickly as the adhesive doe tend to dry rather quickly.
TIP: You can trim your acrylic nails beforehand! Place the nail you will be using on what ever finger you choose over your natural nail and begin to trim and file it, making sure to not be overly conservative. If you leave too much acrylic nail behind you can always quickly trim it once the adhesive is applied.Repeat the above procedure for all of your nails. If any of the nails do not apply themselves in a straight line, you can then soak your finger(s) in acetone until the nail can be removed, and you can start over from that point.
Once you have successfully applied your artificial nails at home, you can then mix up a solution of liquid and powder acrylic (this usually comes with the acrylic nail kit) and apply it right to your artificial nails, just as you would a nail polish.
TIP: Make sure to not let this solution ever touch your natural nail bed directly! If you do, you may end up with a bad case of nail fungus.Once your nails are dry and buffed, the nail polish you choose can then be applied. Apply a second coat once the first coat has dried, and you’re done!
