One of the worst mistakes that people on a diet make is that they don’t think that they can have any fat in their diet. Truth be told, fat is a necessary part of life! Without fat, our body won’t be able to function properly and it will cause a breakdown to our system.
The Saturated Fats
Saturated fats are known to raise cholesterol levels, and it’s also a contributing factor to heart disease. These fats can usually be found in foods that are derived from animals, such as:
- Cheese
- Lard
- Butter
- 2% and whole (homo) milk
- Any processed meats, such as bacon, lunch meat, sausages, hot dogs and bologna
- Fatty meats, such as beef, lamb and pork (this does not include lean cuts of meat)
- Poultry cooked with skin
A small amount of saturated fats a day isn’t going to cause your body a lot of harm, but the thing to remember is that you need to reduce your consumption of these types of food rather than increase them. If you can eliminate saturated fats all together, your health will be all the more thankful!
The Transfats
Here are the worst offenders of them all: the transfats. Most products that you will see line the grocery store shelves will boast about having no transfats, and for a good reason. Transfats have a strong link to heart disease and other cardiovascular-related diseases.
So what are transfats? Transfats came about when scientists decided to try to turn liquid fat into a solid form of fat. The benefit to using transfats was that using transfats in products allowed that product to have a longer shelf life, so it wouldn’t go to waste as quickly. Transfats also help lock in the flavor for products, which is why it can also be considered to be addictive to some. Transfats can be hiding in a number of foods that we consume on a daily basis, and you may not even realize it! You can find transfats lurking in:
- Ice cream
- Cookies
- Cakes
- Cereal
- Baked goods
- Chocolates
- Shortening
- Margarine
- Pies
- Pizzas
