The standard needle method, dermal punching, indwelling cannula as well as piercing gun methods are commonly used. However, you need to be extra careful and take proper care during and after you get your ears pierced.
Here are some tips to help you with the aftercare associated with ear piercing.
Some tips
Usually, it takes about 8-10 weeks for most people to heal.
You should keep the piercing clean by cleaning it at the most once every day. You should do this in the shower.
You can use saline to rinse your piercing. This will get rid of the crust that might have developed due to accumulated lymph.
Your hair can infect the piercing. Hair products, dirt, oil and bacteria can be irritating to the wound.
You should use shampoos and hair care products that have less harsh chemicals and that do not irritate your wound, at least in the healing stage.
You should also keep your pillowcase clean and dirt free.
If you eat healthy and live a relatively healthy lifestyle with no drugs and alcohol, you will be able to heal faster.
Zinc and vitamin B will make the healing rapid.
Don’ts of aftercare
Touch your piercing only when you are cleaning it. Do not keep on touching it. You should only gently rotate the jewellery so that any crusting is avoided. However, before touching it, make sure you wash and clean your hands.
Keep the piercing on for at least 3 months. This will give enough time for the wound to heal and not get damaged.
Keep the wound as dry as you can.
Avoid the use of any ointments, witch hazel, hydrogen peroxide or alcohol. This can cause the ear pain and scar too.
Avoid things like headphones, hats, telephones, even reading glasses, anything that comes in contact with your ears. Keep them away until it gets healed.
Public phones should not be used at all because they will have lots of bacteria and can result in serious infections.
