Vitamins for Smooth Skin

5dc2b smooth legs Vitamins for Smooth SkinThe sun’s rays, pollution and even cosmetics will damage your skin if you don’t take steps to protect it. Keep your skin clean and moisturized, drink the recommended daily amount of water and take your vitamins. Generally, a multivitamin provides an adequate amount of any vitamin you may run short of in your daily diet. However, if you still have issues with dry skin or if you have some wrinkles you’d like to get rid of, talk to your doctor about adding a higher dose of some of these supplements to your routine.

Beta-carotene

Your body converts beta-carotene to vitamin A as needed to fight the effects of free radicals that break down the collagen in your skin. In addition to minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, vitamin A effectively controls acne outbreaks. You can get more beta-carotene in the form of an oral supplement or you can add more fruits and vegetables such as carrots and peaches to your diet. Many face creams contain the vitamin A derivative retinol, which aids in fighting the signs of aging and relieves dry, flaky skin.

Vitamins C and E

Two powerful antioxidants, vitamins C and E, work well together to protect and promote healthy, younger-looking skin. Both vitamins reduce the consequences of sun exposure by fighting the free radicals that attack your skin. Vitamin C also increases the production of collagen to give you firmer, smoother skin. The American Academy of Dermatology has published studies suggesting that vitamin E may reduce the skin’s production of cancer-causing cells. Add more vitamin C to your diet in the form of citrus fruits and dark green vegetables, and to get more vitamin E, eat plenty of raw nuts and seeds, leafy greens and soybeans. Topical creams containing vitamin C can reduce wrinkles and expedite the healing of wounds. Some ointments contain both vitamins C and E. These treatments can effectively fight the signs of aging.

Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE)

This naturally occurring compound supports the collagen in the outer layers of the skin. Available as either an oral supplement or a topical treatment, DMAE effectively fights the signs of aging, resulting in firmer, tighter skin. Many skin care products combine DMAE with alpha lipoic acid, a potent antioxidant that eliminates free radicals to protect the skin’s elasticity.

Biotin and Niacin

Many of the B vitamins, such as biotin and niacin, support and promote healthy skin. Your body naturally produces some biotin, but adding more of it to your daily routine will nourish dry or irritated skin. Niacin dilates blood vessels and capillaries, and the increased blood flow promotes healthy skin cell growth. Increase your intake of vitamin B-rich foods such as oatmeal, bananas, eggs and rice to harness their skin-nourishing power.
