When the skin is constantly exposed to the sun, it can lead to hypermelanosis a condition which is known as melasma. This skin problem is characterized by the appearance of brown spots around the forehead, chin, cheeks, upper lip and nose.
Women are more prone to this skin condition than men. Melasma is not a hazardous skin condition and can be treated with the application of topical skin creams or certain natural ingredients.
Women with brown skin tones are more likely to develop melasma. Pregnant women in the second or third trimester of their pregnancy may also develop this skin condition. Excessive production of the pigment melanin, which gives our skin its natural color, leads to the appearance of these ugly brown spots.
Besides the excessive production of the skin pigment melanin; prolonged exposure to the sun, thyroid problems, ovarian disorders, hormonal imbalance, and menopause can result in melasma. Women on oral contraceptive pills and those who are on medication containing tetracycline or phenytoin may also develop melasma.
There are a number of ways to treat melasma. One of the best ways to combat this common skin condition is with the application of hydroquinone creams and vitamin A enriched creams. These creams contain certain potent ingredients which can lighten the skin tone and reduce the appearance of the brown spots. Apply these creams religiously for the prescribed period of time to obtain the maximum benefits.
Application of chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser treatment can treat the problem of melasma. The best chemical peels to treat melasma are TCA (tri-choloro-acetic) acid and glycolic acid peels. These treatment procedures should only be done under the supervision of a qualified dermatologist. Depending on the level of pigmentation, a person may have to undergo several sessions of this cosmetic procedure before getting any satisfactory results.
A rather expensive but effective way to treat melasma is with laser treatment. Laser beams are trained on the effected regions to remove the affected skin and promote new skin growth. People with this skin disorder should apply sunscreens enriched with zinc and titanium to prevent further discoloration of the skin.
There are several natural ways to treat melasma. Apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, aloe vera juice and turmeric paste can be applied on the affected regions to make the brown spots fade away.
